General Annual Meeting

On the 28th of January the association CIUDADANOS EUROPEOS de BALEARES celebrated its 16th General Annual Meeting. At the ceremony the fourth Vice-president of the association was announced to be Raul Alexandru Cordos from Romania. He now acts as one of the main representatives of the association together with John Lambourne (Spain), Edward Ingram (Great Britain), Waldemar Kondratowski (Poland) and Joachim Wagner - President (Germany); representing as many different European countries as possible. .

Visit of the CIUDADANOS EUROPEOS de BALEARES in Poland.

Waldemar Kondratowski is very engaged in two associations : He is the Vice-President of the CIUDADANOS EUROPEOS and President of the Polish Association of the Balearic – so he was in the best position to organize this trip with the title :“ Get to know the European capitals „. 20 participants from Mallorca, Germany, Sweden and Poland had a fascinating excursion of 3 days in Warsaw and 3 days in Krakow. The first highlight of Warsaw was a special visit in the polish Parliament and Senate – received by a member of the parliament and the possibility to have a look behind the scenes. Waldemar Kondratowski presented in the name of the Polish Association of Mallorca the Condolence Book for president ..................with hundreds of signatures from Balearic residents and politicians. In the Senate Meeting room Tummy Bestard expressed greetings from Mallorca and the president of CIUDADANOS EUROPEOS, Joachim Wagner, delivered greetings from the Balearic Europeans. After the visit at Europes largest Electricity Plant – which is located very close to the where floods are currently threatening Poland - the visitors had the delight of attending a piano concert with melodies by Chopin in the private apartment of the well known polish pianist Pawel Kowalski. At the end of these three days in Warsaw, the group travelled cross- country by bus to Krakow with many beautiful impressions of the pretty countryside along the way, but also of the movement and growth in this rapidly emerging country with construction and building cranes everywhere (similar to Mallorca three years ago). All the visitors were enthusiastic about the historic city of Krakow – which for centuries was the capital of Poland. A lot of restoration work is going on, lots of restaurants offer their delicious food from all over the world and the original small streets are crowded with students. Another highlight was the visit to the mountains of the High Tatra and the skiing City of Zakopane, where the former Pope John Paul II used to spend his skiing holidays. This area is already very touristy and who really wants to see this beautiful landscape unspoilt should hurry up ! The last visit was dedicated to something very unique: the worlds greatest and oldest salt mine in Wieliczka, active since the 12 th century with more than 300 km roads in 64 to 327 m below surface. It has chapels, meeting rooms, a lot of monuments entirely formed out of salt rocks and a complete hospital for treatment with salted air. The mine stopped extracting salt in 1996 when the UNESCO declared its cultural heritage and now about 1,2 million tourists visit the mine every year. The farewell dinner took place in the club house of the Krakow Valley golf course, owned by natives who received the mallorquin group with great hospitality, just like all the other natives did during the journey through this wonderful country.. All the participants enjoyed the journey very much. For the next year, the CIUDADANOS EUROPEOS are planning a trip to the Baltic States and we welcome all of you to join.

The CIUDADANOS EUROPEOS of the BALEARES presented the EUROPEAN OF THE YEAR at a Gala Dinner on Saturday 8th May 2010 held at the GOLF HOTEL, SANTA PONCA, There were 91 nominations - Clergyman LORENZO ALCINA ROSSELLO was elected as the EUROPEAN OF THE YEAR by an International Jury of five judges: Mrs. Barbara Walus (Poland), Mrs. Easter Verstappen (Nederlands), Mrs. Heidi Luebke (Germany), Mr. Mateo Cladera (Mallorca) and Mr. Ralph Arroyo (United States) Further information about the event and LORENZO ALCINA ROSSELLO, can be read this week-end in the newspaper ULTIMA HORA and within the next few days in the DAILY BULLETIN. The Clergyman LORENZO ALCINA ROSSELLO Lorenzo Alcina was born on Palma de M. on the 14th August 1939. His mother is French, his father Spanish. He attended the Montesion High School in Palma and graduated in Barcelona with Roman languages and Philosophy. He came back to Mallorca as a clergyman and has been secretary to Bishop Alvarez and for a short period to Bishop Ubeda. He was nominated rector of the Seminary and in 1971 was put in the charge of the Ecumenism (Ecumenical Christianity) of Mallorca. Later he was director of the Centre of Theological Studies in Palma d. M. He is responsible for all foreign communities and fellow compatriots on the Island, he organises regularly meetings and events. His special concern is to help with the integration of the Eastern Europe citizens, for example the people from Poland, Romania and Bulgaria – he was looking after these citizens before they became part of the European Community. Don Lorenzo Alcina is a person, who listens to everybody and who enjoys helping people, especially solving their problems. He was nominated by 37 people to be the EUROPEAN OF THE YEAR.

DURING THE LAST FEW YEARS THERE HAS BEEN HARDLY ANY NEWS FROM CIUDADANOS EUROPEOS. ON JANUARY 23, THE ASSOCIATION HELD ITS WELL ATTENDED ANNUAL PLENARY MEETING IN THE RISKAL CONFERENCE CENTER.

ON THIS OCCASION A NEW PRESIDENT WAS ELECTED WHO WAS DETERMINED TO CONTINUE PROJECTS SIMILAR TO THOSE PLANNED DURING THE EARLY YEARS OF THE ASSOSIATION SOME 12 YEARS AGO.

DR JOACHIM WAGNER, BUSINESSMAN AND LAWYER, WAS ELECTED AS PRESIDENT. ACCORDING TO DR WAGNER, WHO IS RESIDENT ON MALLORCA WITH HIS FAMILY FOR 23 YEARS , HE IS A “EUROPEAN WITH A GERMAN PASSPORT”. HE HAS BEEN INVOLVED WITH CIUDADANOS EUROPEOS SINCE ITS FOUNDATION.

THE VICE PRESIDENT, JOHN LAMBOURNE, IS A MALLORQUIN WITH SCOTTISH ORIGENS AND WITH A WIDE EXPERIENCE IN ADMINISTRATIVE AND SOCIAL AFFAIRS. HE WISHES TO RETIRE AS SOON AS A SUITABLE SUCCESSOR CAN BE FOUND.

SERGE POPULO , A FRENCH CITIZEN, WAS ELECTED FOR THE IMPORTANT FUNCTION OF THE SECRETARY GENERAL. MR. POPULO HAS EXPERIENCE IN EUROPEAN POLITICS AND SPECIALIZES IN LEGAL AND SOCIAL MATTERS, AS WELL AS IN FOUNDATIONS.

MRS. EDITH HAYDN-WAGNER WILL, IN HER FUNCTION AS SPOKES PERSON, LIASE WITH THE MEDIA SUCH AS THE PRESS, THE RADIO AND TV.

PUBLICITY, CULTURAL AND SOCIAL EVENTS ARE IN THE HANDS OF WALDEMAR KONDRATOWSKI OF POLISH NATIONALITY.

ANGELINE VAN DER HEIJDEN, WHO IS A DUTCH CITIZEN, WILL ACTIVELY AIM TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF ASSOCIATED MEMBERS.

DURING THE PLENUM, DR WAGNER, THE NEW PRESIDENT, SPOKE ABOUT PROGRAMMING DECISIVE MATTERS RELATED TO THE ASSOSIATION .

ACCORDING TO THE LATEST STATISTIC INFORMATION, 114.000 NON SPANISH EUROPEANS FROM THE 27 COUNTRIES OF THE COMMON MARKET LIVE IN THE BALEARIC ISLANDS – E.G. 33.000 GERMANS AND 22.000 BRITANS LIVE ALONGSIDE – AS WELL NATIONALS FROM EASTERN COUNTRIES SUCH AS BULGARIA (8,000), 10.000 ROMANIA (10,000) AND POLAND (5,000) APPROXIMATELY.

ONE OF THE GOALS OF THE FUTURE EMPHAZISES THE MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING AND THE ELIMINATION OF PREJUDICES. DID ANYBODY KNOW THAT THE POLISH COMMUNITY IS CULTURALLY VERY ACTIVE IN MALLORCA?

THE BALEARES CAN BE CONSIDERED A CULTURAL EUROPEAN MELTING POT. IN ORDER TO STRENGTHEN THE LOCAL INTEGRATION IT IS NECCESARY, DUE TO THE REDUCED SPACE IN WHICH WE LIVE, TO FIND A COMMON EUROPEAN IDEA AND AVOID NATIONALISTIC AND LOCAL IDEAS.

THE “CIUDADANOS EUROPEOS” ARE PLANNING THE OPENING OF A SUITABLE WELLCOME OFFICE FOR EUROPEANS WHO REQUIRE HELP AND TO PROVIDE A MEETING POINT FOR INTERESTED MEMBERS.

ACTIVITIES WILL TAKE PLACE ON THE FOLLOWING DATES:

2) INFORMATION FOR THE EUROPEAN RESIDENTS LIVING ON MALLORCA REGARDING THE FORTHCOMING ELECTION OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT – 07/06/09

ACCORDING TO DR. WAGNER THE EUROPEAN RESIDENTS SHOULD BECOME ORGANISED AND REALIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF ADDING 114,000 POTENTIAL VOTERS.

TO FINACE THE ACTIVITIES OF THE ASSOCIATION, IT RELIES ON THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES, BUT MOST NOTABLY, ON PRIVATE SPONSORS WHO DESIRE TO STRENGTHEN THE IDEA OF EUROPE THROUGH THE CIUDADANOS EUROPEOS.

Welcome speech ­ Welcome by the President of Ciudadanos Europeos, Joaquin Wagner.

We start our series of events and meetings for the year 2009 with this Spring reception in this unique place. (It should be noted that the event was held in the church of the Hilton Hotel, Sa Torre).

The intention of the CE Association is to bring together Europeans that live on the island and encourage and help them to integrate in this society that they have chosen to live.

I refer especially to the citizens of the new member States of the European Community ­ which we still as yet do not know well and must learn more about ­ the history of all our cultures, unites us, and has for many centuries. For this reason I am very happy that the citizens of Bulgaria, Romania, the Baltic countries, Czechoslovakia, Slovenia, Hungary and Poland have joined us ­ and may I give you a special welcome from all of us.

The politicians have created a fantastic European Union of 27 countries ­ but now the idea of Europe must be realised by the citizens.

It is not enough to just remove borders ­ one must open your hearts, for this reason the motto of our meeting is: TO GO FROM STRANGERS TO FRIENDS: that the new neighbours are given a hand and hence create friendships.
